The TT21 is a very interesting new transponder.  It is a Mode S transponder with a built-in altitude encoder, and a remote head.

The TT21 is a Class 2 transponder - certified for use up to 15,000 feet.  The TT22 (below) is a Class 1 transponder - certified for use up to 35,000 feet.  If you plan to fly over 15,000 feet, you will probably want the TT22 (below).

The  front panel controller is smaller than a standard instrument, with a remote transponder.  The TT21 can fit into the smallest of aircraft – and yet it is fully certified and compliant with all the transponder requirements.

The TT22 is a Class 1 transponder - certified for use up to 35,000 feet.  The TT21 (above) is a Class 2 transponder - certified for use up to 15,000 feet.  If you plan to fly over 15,000 feet, you will probably want the TT22 (this one).

Trig TT22 & ADS-B

The TT31 Mode S Transponder is FAA STC approved for use with Garmin's GNS 400W and 500W-series GPS devices when installed with the latest free TT31 ADS-B STC software (version 3.13 required). This approval, coupled with the TT31's compatibility with existing Bendix King KT76A and KT78A transponder trays makes it a fast, cost-effective retrofit option.

The TT31 is TSO approved for fitting to European and FAA registered aircraft. With a new software upgrade and a connection to an appropriate GPS, this will make the TT31 compliant with the FAA final rule on ADS-B Out for 2020.

The TN70 Kit is an affordable ADS-B Out solution when paired with a Trig Mode S transponder certified to the latest ADS-B standard (FAA TSO C166b) like the TT22 or TT31 models. This kit is ideal for operators intending to use ADS-B In to access ADS-B ground services (TIS-B and FIS-B), because a compliant ADS-B Out is required. TN72 ADS-B GPS

 

 

 

The TN72 GPS receiver is a fully certified product (FAA TSO-C199) designed for voluntary equipage and use in areas outside of designated or mandated ADS-B airspace. Glider, light sport and general aviation pilots can all enhance their safety by connecting a TN72 position source to their existing Trig transponder. Once configured, the TN72 GPS receiver provides precise and reliable data with non-zero quality indicators. This technical standard supports current and future air to air collision avoidance and situational awareness applications. TN72 certification is based upon an FAA standard known as Traffic Awareness Beacon System or TABS for short. In contrast to uncertified position sources the TN72 is more dependable and is visible to all types of ADS-B In traffic receivers.

TN72 currently can only be paired with a Trig transponder.  1090 ES

If the customer already has a TT21 or TT22 transponder fitted already they do need to be aware that the transponder software version must be 2.12 or higher and transponder controller software version must be 1.14 or higher and if they have a TT31 transponder software version must be 3.16 or higher.  Software updates are offered free of charge via Mid Continent Instruments and Avionics.

The TN72 is compatible with any GPS antenna approved to ETSO C190 or C114a; the recommended antenna is the Trig TA70.  Where a non-TSO antenna is used, the antenna must include an integral amplifier with gain of not less than 20dB.  The TN72 uses a QMA connection for the antenna.

 What do I need to do?  The proposed regulation for 2020.

Glider pilots may be purchasing the TT-21 hoping that should gliders lose the 2020 ADS-B Out carriage exemption then they could add a suitable GPS receiver and use the Trig TT-21 to meet an ADS-B Out requirements. They currently will not be able to do that with a TT-21, they can with the higher-power TT-22.

Both certified and experimental aircraft can use Trig equipment. Certified aircraft will need a compliant transponder (or transmitter), a 2020 compliant WAAS GPS and Air/Ground Determination, (typically an air speed switch or squat switch). Experimental aircraft will also require a certified transponder and Air/Ground Determination. However, the FAA will allow the use of a WAAS GPS that meets the performance requirements of the 2020 mandate, this may be uncertified.

Installing a Trig transponder is the easy way to become compliant. Connecting a suitable GPS and configuring Trig’s 1090 ES technology creates a highly effective ADS-B Out capability. Many pilots then wish to add an ADS-B In traffic receiver, to get live traffic information displayed in the cockpit.

To be precise the issue is that 14 CFR § 91.227 requires 1090ES Out installations (that gliders are currently exempt from) to utilize TSO-C166b Class A1, A1S, A2, A3, B1S, or B1 devices. Lower power TSO-C166c Class B0 devices like the Trig TT-21, which are used for ADS-B Out in other countries, are not compliant in the USA. The Trig TT-22 is a TSO-C166c Class B1S device and so is complaint. This all only matters if gliders lose the current 1090ES Out exemption or if owners want to voluntarily equip with ADS-B Out.

All this might change with future TABS/TSO-C199 related regulations but glider owners wanting to best protect their future options really should be choosing a Trig TT-22 over the TT-21. Both the TT-21 and TT-22 are perfectly good and very nice Mode S transponders, it's only the lack of ability in the TT-21 to support fully complaint 1090ES Out that is the issue.
